Seminar | Incentivising value-based health care using patient-reported outcome measures in the English National Health Service

Speaker: Nils Gutacker, University of York, UK Many health systems seek to incentivise value-based healthcare delivery to control costs and improve population health. Dr Gutacker will reflect on the English patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) programme and how routinely collected data on patient-reported outcomes after hip and knee replacement surgery have been used by the English National Health Service (NHS) to measure, monitor and incentivise care quality. He will present an empirical evaluation of a national PROM-based pay-for-performance (P4P) scheme that ties hospital payments to improvements in patients' health-related quality of life. Nils Gutacker is a Professor of Health Economics at the University of York, UK. He is the co-director of the REAL Supply Unit, member of the German governments' expert council on health and care, and a member of the NHS England Advisory Committee on Resource Allocation. He leads the Health Policy team at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York.
